About Me
Michael Bastos was originally born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and moved to Florida at the age of six. Growing up in the early days of computers and the commercial internet, he spent years teaching himself graphic design and database analysis as well as web based programming.
Upon graduating high school in 2001, Michael joined the United States Marine Corps and became a Human Resource Assistant and eventual manager. He received his first Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his consistant work ethic and ability to see a project through no matter the hours or self sacrifice required.
Deploying in 2004 where Mr. Bastos received the Humanitarian Service Medal in support of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Relief Efforts to the Island of Sumatra in Indonesia. In 2005 he was deployed to Kuwait and Southern Iraq during the initial Iraqi elections receiving his second Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in lieu of a Gold Star for my achievements in the combat environment.
Upon his return to the states he reenlisted once more and entered the Logistical Maintenance Management field where he remained for the rest of his tour and flourished in his organizational and management skills. Michael deployed again to Iraq in 2006 towards the Al-Anbar Province of Iraq near the northern border with Syria for 12 months and recieved his third Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his work as a Logisitical Supervisor and contactor liaison while having to work closely with both American, Turkish and Iraqi contractors in construction efforts.
Mr. Bastos eventually married and settled down in San Diego, California but was sent for one final overseas tour in Okinawa, Japan for 13 months where he worked closely with the Logistical Higher Brass of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force and was given a chance to work on Data Analysis projects. Michael assisted as an Analyst in gathering much needed information for the Commanding General’s Logistical Brief as well as ran the day to day supervisory operations of such programs as the Combat Ready Storage Program, Corrosion Prevention and Control Program and the Depot Level Maintenance Program.
His favorite task was the creation of a Database using Open Source Software that could upload large amounts of maintenance information processed daily from all of the Marine Units in Okinawa and Hawaii and have it instantly find every and all mistakes along with a detailed profile of what the problem was, the impact it had on the command as a whole and the solution they needed to implent in order to fix it.
Upon his return to San Diego at the beginning of February 2009 Mr. Bastos left the Marine Corps to enter the civilian sector where he enrolled at National University finishing a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science. Michael eventually became a freelance open source programmer and has given speaches on a variety of venues in southern California promoting Open Source adoption and development.
